三、教學目標 Objectives
Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to improve students’ ability to critically read and discuss current events and to increase the amount of vocabulary each student knows. 
四、課程內容 Course Description
整體敘述 Overall Description
Course Structure: On the weekend before class, the teacher will post the three articles that will be covered in that week’s class on the teacher’s blog.

These articles will be taken from various news sources.

The first story [A] will be done by the teacher in the first hour of class and the other two [B and C] will be done in the groups in the second hour. Students are responsible for printing out the three articles in advance and bringing them to class. All exam and quiz questions will come from these articles. The teacher will supply all activity sheets related to the A article covered in the first hour as well as vocabulary [for all three articles] for the quizzes.
The class will be structured as follows: The teacher will teach the first article, ‘A’, during the first hour. In the second hour of class, students, in groups of 4, will take turns presenting the other two articles. Thus each student will have to present an article every other week. Students will present articles in alphabetical order, so if your name comes first in the group [ex. Amy] you present the ‘B’ article. The next student in the group [ex. Betty] presents article ‘C’. The remaining two students will present articles the following week. Everyone should read the articles in advance. Each student has approximately 20 - 25 minutes to lead a discussion on the article. The teacher will grade the student’s performance in class so students must create handouts like question sheets or other activity sheets and give a copy to the teacher [with your English name on it]. It is VERY IMPORTANT to give a copy of your question sheet on the day you present that article. Late question sheets will receive a substantial penalty. Group members will rotate every four weeks. All group members must participate in the discussion. Your grade depends on your participation!
Students will start presenting their own articles in week 3 of the semester and students will present in alphabetical order of their English name in their group.

In Class Grading: The In Class portion [20%] of the final grade will be calculated as follows

No one missing more than 720 minutes of class will be allowed to pass the course regardless of the reason. The ‘In Class’ grades may be adjusted up (or down) by as much as 10% if the teacher feels that the student has made an effort far above (or below) the general level of the other students. If you hope to increase your grade try the following:

No Chinese Rule: If the teacher hearing you using Chinese in class you will receive a red ‘C’ and your ‘In Class’ grade will be reduced by 2%. The first three ‘Cs’ are free and will incur no penalty.


Quizzes: Surprise vocabulary quizzes will be regularly given in class. These quizzes will cover any of the vocabulary lists given by the teacher. Students are urged to keep a notebook of the vocabulary and review it regularly. A total of four surprise quizzes will be given throughout the semester.
