三、教學目標 Objectives
This course will engage students in carefully thinking through the relation between literature and philosophy. The focus of the course will be on the careful reading and analysis of selected texts from the literary and philosophical tradition (primarily the European traditions, with additional materials from the East-Asian traditions). Emphasis will be placed on a few major questions: How do philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, Kant and Nietzsche understand the function of literary works? Why are philosophers interested in fiction and fictional truth? How can literature help us to cultivate certain moral emotions? What is the relationship between aesthetic perception/imagination and the formation of character? Why are we able to understand the perspectives of characters in a novel or in a play? Why do we feel sad when we read about the death of literary figures? Etc.
