三、教學目標 Objectives
本課程為政治系高年級學生與國際交換學生設計,瞭解亞洲人權狀況的基本課題。
This course is designed specifically for students of political science department and international exchange students at Soochow University. It aims at providing the students with a beginning understanding of the human rights situation in Asia.
四、課程內容 Course Description
整體敘述 Overall Description
Broadly speaking, this course is divided into three parts: the first part will deal with the making of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ushering in the worldwide human rights movement in the past some sixty years. The second part will take up the challenge of cultural relativism, in particular, the Asian Values Debate. Finally, the third part would turn to human rights situation in Asia, describing and analyzing the human rights records of selected Asian countries. If circumstances permit, one or two guest lecturers from United States, Europe or Asian countries will be invited.
The reading material includes selected books and articles, UN documents as well as reports by international NGOs.
For evaluation of the performance, the students will be required to take a mid-term examination and have the choice of either final examination or submitting a term paper.
