本課程是英語語義學的入門課程。本課程結束時,學生將能夠 英語語義知識與理解-解釋英語語義學中的關鍵概念和術語(例如:同義、夾義、歧義、預設、牽連)。 區分語言意義(語義學)和上下文意義(語用學-分析技巧 分析英文字詞、短語和句子的語義結構、意義關係和歧義。 評估不同方言、語域和文化背景下的意義差異。 實際應用-應用語義原理解決現實生活中的溝通問題(例如,誤解、翻譯錯誤、人工智能產生的歧義)。 使用 AI 工具(例如 ChatGPT、Grammarly、AI 翻譯器)支援英文內容的語意分析、意譯和修改。 溝通與協作-以團隊形式合作,設計並展示語義分析或專案,將課程概念與真實世界的語言使用(如廣告、社交媒體、跨文化互動)相關聯。 批判性反思-反思語義知識如何增強英語溝通,並發展對不同情境中意義協商的更深認識。 |

This course is an introduction to the semantics is expressed in English language. By the end of this course, students will be able to: Knowledge & Understanding Explain key concepts and terminology in English semantics (e.g., synonymy, entailment, ambiguity, presupposition, implicature). Distinguish between linguistic meaning (semantics) and contextual meaning (pragmatics). Analytical Skills Analyze English words, phrases, and sentences for semantic structure, meaning relations, and ambiguity. Evaluate meaning variations across dialects, registers, and cultural contexts. Practical Application Apply semantic principles to solve real-life communication issues (e.g., misinterpretation, translation errors, AI-generated ambiguities). Use AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, AI translators) to support semantic analysis, paraphrasing, and revision of English content. Communication & Collaboration Collaborate in teams to design and present semantic analyses or projects that connect course concepts to real-world language use (e.g., advertising, social media, cross-cultural interaction). Critical Reflection Reflect on how semantic knowledge enhances English communication, and develop greater awareness of meaning negotiation in diverse contexts. |

四、課程內容 Course Description | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
●整體敘述 Overall Description This course introduces key concepts of English semantics (語意學) based on Charles Kreidler’s Introducing English Semantics. Each week consists of a 1-hour interactive lecture (with a clear PPT outline) and a 1-hour worksheet session emphasizing peer learning and inter-group sharing. Contextualized examples draw on Taiwanese culture, with bilingual support (English with Mandarin Chinese) to aid understanding. Assessment components include a Midterm group presentation, a Final group presentation, weekly reflection journals, and participation in in-class tasks. Students maintain an English reflection journal (with Mandarin notes as needed) throughout the course to connect semantic theory to personal language experiences. |

In general, a 100-minute class period will be divided into the following activities: 1. Guided reading presentation 2. Q & A Discussion 3. Minds-on and/heads-on activities Students need to Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT). Students need to have the ability to work with peers. Students will be expected to attend our weekly meetings. Active participation in these course meetings is required. Students are expected to deliver a reading presentation on one of the course readings. Students are expected to complete a project, based on the theme of the course. | |||||
