三、教學目標 Objectives

In 2022, Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the blood-testing company Theranos, was found guilty of fraud and conspiracy. Since the Wall Street Journal's exposé in 2015, Holmes's story has been the subject of a book, a documentary, a podcast, and a television series. The audience just can't seem to get enough of crime stories. Why are we so fascinated by crimes? How to writers tackle questions about truth and ethics when they depict crimes in their works? This course will study the literary and cultural histories of fiction and nonfiction to explore the complex relationship between narrative and crime. We will begin in eighteenth-century Britain, where criminal biographies influenced the development of the novel. Then we will examine how crime fiction became a genre in the nineteenth century through the detective stories of Edgar Allan Poe and Sir Conan Doyle. Finally, we will study the emergence of the genre true crime in the 20th and 21st centuries in a variety of formats, including nonfiction, television, and podcast.
