三、教學目標 Objectives
本課程是對語言科學的介紹。
探討語言的地域與社會變體: 介紹社會語言學的基本概念,分析語言在不同地理區域(方言、皮欽語、克里奧爾語)與社會群體(社會方言、語域、非裔美國人英語)中的變異現象。
理解語言習得機制: 探討第一語言(L1)與第二語言(L2)習得的理論與歷程,分析影響學習的關鍵因素(如年齡、情感、動機),並了解不同的語言教學法(如溝通式教學法、任務導向學習)及學習者特徵(如中介語、語言轉移)。
反思語言、文化與認知的連結: 深入探討語言如何反映並形塑文化與社會類別,評估語言相對論(薩丕爾-沃夫假說),並分析性別及社會權力關係在語言使用上的展現。
分析語言歷史與演變: 探究語言的歷史發展脈絡(如古英語至現代英語),並能辨識及分析語音、語法及語義在歷時(diachronic)與共時(synchronic)上的演變規律。
認識多元溝通模式及動物的語言。








Understand Language Acquisition: To examine the fundamental theories and processes of first and second language acquisition, analyzing affective and cognitive factors (e.g., age, motivation), teaching methodologies (e.g., Communicative Approaches, Task-Based Learning), and learner development (e.g., transfer, interlanguage).
Explore Modalities of Communication: To identify non-vocal forms of human communication, analyzing the linguistic functions of gestures and the structural properties of sign languages.
Analyze Language History and Change: To trace the historical development of language (e.g., the history of English) and identify the mechanisms of sound, syntactic, and semantic changes through diachronic and synchronic perspectives.
Examine Linguistic Variation: To introduce core concepts in sociolinguistics, analyzing how language varies across different geographical regions (regional dialects, pidgins, creoles) and social groups (social dialects, registers, African American English).
Evaluate Language, Culture, and Cognition: To critically explore the intricate relationship between language and culture, evaluating the linguistic relativity hypothesis (Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis) and investigating how social categories, particularly gender, influence speech and interaction.

整體敘述 Overall Description
This course is intended for all students interested in language science, cognitive science, languages, communications, and related fields.
Discussion sections are synchronous and attendance is required in order to receive full credits.
Certain class activities in this course will be used for the collection of research data. Participation in the research is entirely voluntary. Refusal or withdrawal will not affect course enrollment rights or grades.

This course is intended for all students interested in language science, cognitive science, languages, communications, and related fields. There are no prerequisites.
九、課程其他要求 Other Requirements
You are encouraged to work together with classmates to solve the problem.
In general, the 150-minute class period will be divided into the following activities:
Summary of the reading presentation 2. Q & A Discussion 3. Minds-on and/or heads-on activities
Students need to Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT).
Students will be expected to attend our weekly meetings.
Active participation in these course meetings is required.
Students are expected to deliver a reading presentation on one of the course readings.
Students are expected to come out a project related to the theme of the course.
