三、教學目標 Objectives
英法聯軍後,清廷於1860年起開放基隆、淡水、安平、打狗通商港口。其中淡水港因其淡水流域穩定的河運,有效的集中台灣北部丘陵地區的茶葉以及樟腦兩大經濟作物,而使台北盆地漸次取代南部的蔗糖經濟,成為台灣經濟中心。也因此引領了台灣走向近代國際社會、世界經濟體系之中。淡水河流域周遭的漢人移墾聚落、城鎮,也因此多見證了台灣由傳統移民社會之聚落型態,轉型為現代都市社會型態,並在其歷史中歷經了原漢衝突、日治時期,以及二戰後的快速工業化時期。因此,對於淡水河系諸河港、城鎮的社會研究,可提供台灣社會轉型及現代化研究諸多素材。因此,本課程之教學目標如下:
一、 了解淡水河流域地方社會轉型歷史與結構變遷。
二、 以全英語授課,提供修課同學利用英文進行學習、寫作之實作機會。
三、 本課程將視情形於周末期間,率領同學,針對特定城鎮或聚落,如淡水、北投、唭哩岸、士林、大稻埕、萬華、板橋、新莊、大溪等地,進行文史考察,並進行影像紀錄,建立英文版本之地方文史影像資料庫。

課程任務:
1. 本課程將利用課間,或周末期間進行社會踏查,修課同學必須注意並配合。
2. 本課程將視經費補助情形,利用周末期間舉辦影像工作坊,修課同學務必注意配合。
3. 本課程將視情形與美國 Worcester polytechnic Institute 的IQP計畫合作。
4. 本課程修課同學需於期末產出一支 10分鐘的影片,紀錄淡水河流域相關文史,並附約1500英文字之說明,上傳至教師指定的網路平台 (如FB社團),並開放學術、公益使用。或是提出特定歷史城市中心深度導覽計畫,並視實際情形現場示範導覽。
After the Second Opium War, the Qing government set up the custom of Keelung, Tamsui, Anping and Kaohsiung ports opened to the world in 1860. Among those ports, Tamsui Port collects effectively high economic value agricultural products of tea and camphor in the mountain areas of northern Taiwan due to the stable river transportation of the Tamsui basin. Such situation makes the Taipei Basin gradually replaced the south Taiwan, the sugar economy, and become the economic center of Taiwan. It also led Taiwan into the modern international society and the world economic system. The settlements and towns of the Han people around the Tamsui River Basin have also witnessed the transformation of Taiwan from a traditional immigrant society to a modern urban society, and experienced the period of rapid industrialization after World War II. Therefore, social research on the river ports and towns in the Tamsui River system can provide so many materials for the research on social transformation and modernization in Taiwan. The purposes of this course are shown below:

1. To understand the process of modernization of Taiwan society through the case studies on the history and structural changes of local society in the Tamsui River Basin.
2. This course is taught in English, providing students with the opportunity to learn the professional knowledge in English and exercise English.
3. The course will lead students to visit certain towns or communities, such as Tamsui, Beitou, Qili'an, Shilin, Dadaocheng (Twatutia), Wanhua (Bangka), Banqiao, Xinzhuang, Daxi, etc. Students should complete a documentary video records to help to create an archive for local history research.

The tasks of the course:
a. The teacher will conduct field trips during the class time or weekends(TBA). Students who take the course must be aware of this and are required to participate.

b. In the case of being subsidized, the teacher will organize a workshop for video documentary in two or three Friday afternoons or weekend time (TBA). It is required to participate.

c. This course would be collaborated with other university project.

d. Students should complete a 10 mins long long documentary video (by cellphone or any other device) with 4 pages of description or propose a cultural expedition / in-depth tourism project, and present in the end of the semester (or demonstrate in the field). The documentary video and description could be present in the future by university only on the purpose of academic usages.
