Objectives

1. Course Design Description:
This course aims to guide students in understanding and critically analyzing social phenomena in Asia and other regions through English-language news articles. The core structure consists of instructor lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on student practice, supplemented with issue-based discussions to enhance critical thinking. Media literacy education is also integrated to help students recognize the connections between media representation and social issues, fostering the ability to view the world from multiple perspectives. Selected units will incorporate Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), offering students opportunities for cross-cultural dialogue and exchange with peers from other countries to deepen their understanding and comparison of diverse social contexts.

2. Teacher–Student Interaction:
Interaction between instructors and students will primarily take place through:
(1) Tronclass, used for posting and receiving course updates and resources; and
(2) Real-time digital feedback systems, where teachers and students engage in live Q&A via electronic devices. This enables the instructor to track students’ learning needs and progress across varying levels of English proficiency and adjust instruction accordingly.

📣 Note to Students:
"Reading the World" is not a traditional English reading class, and there is no need for rote memorization. The course uses news articles as its main materials to compare and contrast different social phenomena, exploring both the diversity and commonality of Asian and other global societies. Although the course is taught entirely in English, the instructor will provide appropriate support to help you successfully meet the course requirements.
Course Description
Overall Description
*** Who is this course for? ***
Do you want to learn more about the world and yourself? Do you want to explore the rich and diverse cultures of East Asia and Southeast Asia? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this course is for you.

Reading the World is a course that will challenge you to think critically and creatively about the world we live in. Don't worry if you think your English is not good enough. You will receive feedback and support from your instructor throughout the semester. You will also have opportunities to express yourself in person or through digital devices.

Reading the World is more than just a course. It is an invitation to broaden your horizons, challenge your assumptions, and discover new ways of seeing the world.

*** What is this course about? ***
In this course, we will use historical and comparative approaches to address a few social phenomena in some parts of East Asia and Southeast Asia. These places have different development paths, but they also share some common historical experiences and contemporary issues. By comparing and contrasting them, we will gain a deeper understanding of their similarities and differences, as well as their roles and impacts in the global context.

This course aims:
1. To help you understand parts of Asia in a historical and comparative light and appreciate their complexity and diversity.
2. To help you develop your critical thinking skills, by engaging with different perspectives, sources, and arguments on various social and economic topics.
3. To encourage you to reflect on your own identity, values, and experiences in relation to those of others in Asia.

We will explore a variety of materials, including news articles for the most part, images and academic readings. I hope you will enjoy learning from each other as much as I will enjoy learning from you.
